This is what beauty in Iran has looked like over the past century.

It’s always fun to take a look back at the trends of bygone years.

Whether it’s ridiculous hair fads from the ’80s to now (looking at you, butterfly clips) or the evolution of body image and makeup ideals throughout the past century, looking back can be both inspiring and cringe-worthy. And the clever cookies of the Internet have given us ample opportunity to do so through countless videos and gifs.

Yet there’s one thing these kinds of nostalgic recaps tend to have in common: they’re usually specific to Western nations and culture. So really, we’re only seeing a slice of the action – what was considered the height of cool in 1960s America might have been quite different in India, for instance.

Which is why the latest video in the ‘100 Years of Beauty‘ series is just so, so great. This time, the time lapse traverses the biggest makeup trends in Iran from the 1910s to the present day, with stunning results. The ’60s bouffant updo featured is truly awe-inspiring (we suspect an entire bottle of hairspray was required).

This visual history also hints at changes in Iran’s social and political landscape over that time, referencing movements such as the Green Revolution of 2009 and the hijab ban of the 1930s.

It makes for an equally beautiful and educational viewing experience.
