Melbourne woman believed murdered in Mozambique on diving holiday.

A 20-year-old Melbourne woman has died while on a diving tour in Mozambique, the ABC understands, and her family believe she was raped and murdered.

Elly Warren, from the bayside suburb of Mordialloc, was on holiday in the African country.

The exact circumstances of her death are still unclear but her sister Kristy Warren said the family was told she had been murdered.

“My sister was in Africa whilst my mum got a phone call from one of the backpackers saying to her that her daughter has been murdered, as I heard that my heart dropped,” she wrote on Facebook.

“It is a parent’s nightmare to get a phone call like this. Elly was always ambitious and had so many goals to go travelling but maybe she had too many.

“Rest in peace Elly, you are loved dearly.”

Her father Paul Warren said his daughter was walking home alone from a party when she was killed on Wednesday.

“[She was] somebody who had a lot of ambition in life and now it’s all been taken away from her,” he said.

“She was a lovely girl and now she’s gone, I’m never going to see her again.”

The family is now travelling to Mozambique.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing consular assistance to Ms Warren’s family.
