Police have called off the search for a pair of teenage girls missing in Indiana after two bodies were found less than a kilometre from their last known whereabouts.

Abigail “Abby” Williams and Liberty “Libby” German, both 13, were dropped off by family for a hike at Monon High Bridge east of Delphi on Monday, and posted a number of photos from the picturesque location soon after, according to Fox 59 News.

They were supposed to be collected from the same bridge, but never showed up.

Worried family members tried to get in touch with the two girls but their phones either ran out of battery or were switched off.

Just one hour after authorities reported them missing in the media, a pair of bodies were found in nearby Deer Creek.

Liberty posted a final image of Abigail to her Snapchat account before the pair were reported missing.

As yet, they have not been formally identified, but police said “foul play” is suspected.

“We are investigating this as a crime scene,” Sergeant Kim Riley of the Indiana State Police said in a press conference.

“We suspect foul play,” he said.

Delphi Police Chief Steve Mullins said he believed members of the community could reasonably “draw their own conclusions” about the situation.

“I know it’s had a terrible effect on our people and we are grieved this sort of thing would happen here in our community,” he told the media.

The local schools corporation sent a letter home with students of Delphi Community Middle School saying counselling services would be available to the girls’ peers.

“It is with heavy hearts that the school corporation day comes to an end. It is our understanding that the two bodies found today were those of our two missing Delphi Community Middle School students,” the letter read.
