The 28-year-old ex-partner of actor Jim Carrey has been found dead – just days after the couple broke up.

Cathriona “Cat” White, an Irish make-up artist, had dated 53-year-old Carrey on and off for the last few years. TMZ reports the pair met in 2012 and dated for a few months before rekindling their relationship in May.

In 2013, during their first split, Carrey told the Irish Independent, “I did go out with an Irish girl. We’re not seeing each other anymore. But she is lovely.

“I have always been attracted to talent, so if someone is beautiful and talented, that’s hard to resist.”

They broke up again on Thursday, TMZ reports.

That same day, White tweeted a cryptic goodbye message, saying: “Signing off Twitter, I hope I have been a light to my nearest and dearest.”

Ms White was found dead in her LA home when two concerned friends went to check on her. It is reported that she left a note that referenced her break-up with the actor.

Friends had grown increasingly concerned about the young make-up artist after a series of cryptic social media messages including this Instagram post:

Twice-divorced Carrey has expressed his grief over the death of Ms White.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of my sweet Cathriona,” Carrey said in a statement.

“She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled. My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her. We have all been hit with a lightening bolt.”

Carrey has spoken in the past of his own battle with depression.

He once told 60 Minutes he used medication to help overcome his struggle.

“There are peaks, there are valleys. But they’re all kind of carved and smoothed out, and it feels like a low level of despair you live in. Where you’re not getting any answers, but you’re living OK. And you can smile at the office. You know? But it’s a low level of despair. You know?”

Carrey also was briefly married to his Dumb and Dumber co-star, Lauren Holly, in the mid-1990s.
