Sad news this morning with the announcement that one of TODAY‘s biggest stars, Georgie Gardner, has quit the long-running breakfast show.
Just before 7.30 this morning, Georgie made the announcement live on air.
“I should probably start by saying I’m not pregnant – neither’s Karl. I’m going to be finishing up on the Today show – I promised I wouldn’t get upset.”
“I’ve given this a lot of consideration obviously but the time has come – I can’t look at you Lisa. I make this announcement with a very heavy heart because you are my family,” Georgie, 48, said.
The long-serving member of the team has been with the Nine Network since 2002 and said she was leaving because of the “punishing hours”.
“You are part of my family,” told the emotional news presenter to the team.
Lisa Wilkinson tweeted shortly afterwards that Georgie will stay with the Network.
“Yes, sadly it’s true, Georgie is leaving @thetodayshow But she is staying with #channel9 and even filling in for me when Im on hols. Will miss her terribly. An incredible colleague, the truest of friends…and simply all class. Love you @georgiegardner9 xxx PS. And Lord help us, but Karl is organizing the farewell!”
Georgie will continue on with Channel 9, working on evening news bulletins, on 60 Minutes and as David Campbell’s co-host on Mornings while Sonia Kruger works on Big Brother.
No news as yet on who her replacement will be.
