Elle MacPherson carries a urine-testing kit in her handbag at all times.

Wanna know how The Body maintains the body?

Elle MacPherson, 51, reckons it’s all about keeping your body “in an alkaline state”.

How do you know your body’s pH level at any given time? Why, you make your way through the world with a little urine-testing kit in your handbag, of course!

“I believe that most ailments come from having an acidic body,” she told London’s Evening Standard in a short Q&A.

It’s fortunate MacPherson is the co-founder of a new luxury “wellness” company called WelleCo that makes Super Elixir Alkalising Greens supplements, then. Phew!

“I don’t worry about wrinkles,” she says. “I tackle internal ageing by nourishing my cells from the inside and the welcome by-product is looking and feeling good.”

According to the acidic/alkaline theory, a typical Western-style diet causes an overload of acid which in turn creates a perfect breeding ground for ill-health, ranging from cancer to the common cold, to flourish.

Devotees limit or completely eliminate many staples including meat, dairy, wheat and certain fruits and vegetables.

To ensure your body remains alkaline, you keep track of the body’s pH level by peeing on handy pH test sticks – what could be simpler?

The question is, do we all need to become alkaline beings?

Well, in a word, no. Sure, load up on leafy greens and cut out processed foods and you’ll probably lose weight and feel pretty good about yourself. But the alkalising diet? Not a thing, apparently.

Elle did have some advice that wasn’t complete hokum, though.

“I prefer to ‘think well,’ embrace life and enjoy the ebbs and flows,” she told The Evening Standard.

“Find beauty in everyday things, write a list of accomplishments and laugh a lot! Humor defuses everything.”

Oh, and in case you’re interested in more socially accepted handbag items, she loves RMS concealers.
