Actress Alice Eve has given her two cents on Bruce Jenner‘s gender transformation for no apparent reason, and basically had her ass handed to her by the entire internet.

In several deleted tweets, Eve, 33, accused Jenner of “playing at being a woman”.

She was roundly denounced online and subsequently, as celebs are wont to do, issued an apology.

“If you were a woman no one would have heard of you because women can’t compete in the decathlon,” the British Star Trek star wrote on Twitter according to the BBC, referring to Jenner’s Olympic-hero past.

“You would be a frustrated young athlete who wasn’t given a chance. Until women are paid the same as men, then playing at being a ‘woman’ while retaining the benefits of being a man is unfair.”

Eve added, “Do you have a vagina? Are you paid less than men? Then, my friend, you are a woman.”

Jenner’s gender transition has been making headlines for months, and he finally spoke about it in an interview with Diane Sawyer on Friday, in which he said, “To all intents and purposes, I am a woman.”

It was the talk of the media, and Jenner was praised for his bravely in bringing the issue front and centre.

Eve was accused of being “transphobic” after her ill-judged tweets.

In subsequent Twitter posts, she backtracked.

“I do agree that the struggle for transgenders is unique and horrific. However, I do want to also support a cause I strongly believe in, the right for women to have equal rights to men.”

After deleting her initial post, she later tried to clarify again: “I’m not saying by identifying they are negatively impacting feminism, I am saying we have to refine the language on this topic so all men, women, and transgenders are accurately represented in their process of self-identification… Maybe this needs a little thought.”

Today, she made a statement to Entertainment Weekly to atone for her comments.

“I deeply apologise for offending anyone. I support equal rights and equal dignity for all. I have deep compassion and support for Bruce Jenner,” Eve said in the statement.

“My intention was not to offend. My intention was simply to express that, with the overdue and welcome acceptance of us all living on a gender spectrum, we must encourage equality for all.”
