Remember when Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams broke up back in 2007? Yeah, I took that hard.

They were the ultimate couple: both adorable, both Canadian…I mean, they were Allie and Noah, dammit! They just made sense.

So yes, I felt personally let down by those two. Because if they couldn’t make it work, what hope did the rest of us chumps have?

But R-Gos and Rach aren’t the only celebrity couple I feel irrationally attached to and emotionally invested in. Oh no.

I don’t want to exaggerate – but if these celebrity couples ever split, it will mean that Love. Is. Dead.

1. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi.

If these two ever split, you may as well break up with your partner or call your divorce lawyer – because if Ellen and Portia can’t survive, all hope is lost.

They’re basically the loveliest people ever and they always look so chuffed – and imagine how FUN that household would be.

Plus, if they broke up, it would mean the end of the annual Ellen and Portia Christmas Card – and that would be the real tragedy.

2. Michelle and Barack Obama.

Mobama are pretty much the royal family of America.

They’ve been married since 1992, have two daughters and are both EQUALLY impressive humans.

They have the cutest first date stories, they are the ultimate power couple, and Barack even once flew Mish to New York for a date night just because he promised her he would while on the campaign trail.

So yeah – if they ever separated, we’d be pretty devo.

 3. Wills and Kate.

Um, do I even need to explain this one? Wills and Kate touched our cold, cynical hearts by showing us that maybe, just maybe, fairytale romance is possible.

Yes, I know it’s cheesy. Yes, I know it’s a cliché. But come on. Kate married a goddam prince. Therefore they must grow old and gross together.

4. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson.

They’ve been married since 1988 – by Hollywood standards, that’s equivalent to a lifetime already.

Recently Rita was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy and re-constructive surgery, and Tom’s been supporting her every step of the way. I don’t think our emotions could handle it if they ever divorced after that.

5. Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson.

What I love about these two is that they just quietly go about their business and you kind of forget they’re even a thing, until you see a random photo of the two of them together and think, “Oh yeah, those guys. I like them”.

I’ve read before that the best sign of a healthy relationship is no sign of it on Facebook. I bet Diane and old Pacey here NEVER post vom-inducing, lovey-dovey Facebook posts.
