It's usually best to ignore Donald Trump. Today, we can't.

Right now it’s hard to escape billionaire wannabe President of the United States Donald Trump. He’s everywhere, sucking up the news cycle with sensationalist sloganeering.

Usually, it’s better to ignore him with the hope that without oxygen, his raging fire will be extinguished. But overnight he made some remarkable comments about abortion, and how women who have them should be treated.

The interview with Donald Trump. Post continues below.

Asked a series of questions about what he would do should the US Government pass legislation to make abortion illegal, Trump’s response was: “There needs to be some form of punishment.”

“For the woman?” asked interviewer Chris Matthews.

“Yeah,” Trump replied.

Trump has been hard to pin down on his position on abortion in the past, at one stage saying he was pro-choice, before changing his mind. This occasion was no different.

Soon after the interview and under fire from people across the political spectrum for suggesting the policing of women’s bodies get punitive, Trump hastily retreated.

“If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman,” his statement read.

“The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb. My position has not changed – like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions.”

So that’s that, right? Trump says typically stupid thing, people get annoyed, Trump changes his mind and the world carries on like any other day in this surreal US election cycle.

Except when you unpack it properly what you have is a candidate for president of the United States – arguably the most powerful position on the planet –  advocating criminal punishment for women who have abortions.

Whatever else you think about Trump, he just jumped the shark.

Abortion rights are a battleground in this upcoming US election, and whether Trump walked away from these statements or not, it’s clear he is prepared to sell out women to get elected. He is not considering this issue from a moral position, or a principled one. He just wants votes.

That’s why, recantation or not, Trump’s comments are so scary.
