I could sit here and write you a standard spiel about WSPA. I could tell you that the Collingwood Football Captain Nick Maxwell and Olympic Gold Medallist swimmer, Leisel Jones are the ambassadors for WSPA, the World Society for the Protection of Animals. Because that’s pretty impressive. It would also be easy for me to cut and paste the details about their campaign to raise awareness and funds for the charity through a cute imitative named ‘Yappy Hour’. But then, if I did that, you probably wouldn’t read it. And I want you to read it.
I want you to be if nothing else, inspired and aware of at least some of the wonderful legacies WSPA (pronounced ‘whisper’) are creating. I know, I KNOW, there are thousands of charities out there that need our help or attention, none more worthy than the next, I could not agree more and I have to tell you that as a cynical lass that abhors being harassed in the street by those charity collectors, it feels like we are being asked to dip into our pockets at every single turn. But I’m not even going ask you to do that.
Today I’m just going to give just a tiny glimpse of what WSPA (who receive zero government funding by the way) are trying to do. What you do next is totally up to you.
Nick Maxwell:
“For one second I just want you think about this. You are a one year old bear, you’ve spent the first twelve months with your mother, then all of a sudden you are kidnapped, smuggled into Pakistan across the border.

WSPA do great work and thanks for promoting such important issues. There is no doubt bearbaiting is abhorrent and must be protested. I wonder though, how anyone can be appalled by this yet implicitly condone factory farming by eating meat and other animal products? Mamamia regularly publishes whole weeks of recipes, all of which contain meat, yet when I bring up animal welfare my posts are removed. We here in the west can do far more for animals than those less privileged and less educated in third world countries like Pakistan. Whilst we are still eating cage eggs, keeping pigs in torture like conditions, killing bobby calves at a few weeks old, live exporting any animal and slaughtering sentient creatures as though they are a product, not a being - then how can we claim the moral high ground? Animals Australia has more information in a non judgemental, helpful way. Earthlings is a documentary worth watching.
Wow, do they really remove your posts on the food posts? I always look at those and think "meat, meat and more meat", and am surprised when no one writes that. Although I do eat a little bit of meat, I mostly eat vegetarian so I've stopped even opening those posts!
Well said Kate A! This is a worthy cause but it's equally important to remember that all animals feel the same pain regardless of how cute/endangered/smart they are. All sentient creatures deserve the same moral consideration. We can all make a huge impact by 'voting with our wallets' each and every time we make a purchase.
I've been donating monthly to WSPA for a long time. I get regular updates on where my donation is going and I am never hassled for extra funds. Big international aid organisations take note. The only time I ever hear from you is when you want more dosh and that's why WSPA is getting your share as well now.
