For a reason we may never comprehend, some people think they know better than medical professionals.
Nah, I don’t need a doctor, they with precisely zero medical knowledge say holding their bleeding wound or half cut off finger.
Don’t trust the people who committed several years of their lives to studying how to fix the human body or anything. What would they know?
It’s this kind of silliness that led to a glorious Reddit thread where doctors, nurses, paramedics and dentists shared the worst wince-worthy DIY medical producers they’ve ever seen on the job.
From super glued teeth and gummy bear fillings to poking knitting needles into bellybuttons, turns out they’ve indeed seen just about everything. You might want to grit your teeth for this, coz it’s gonna hurt.
The completely clueless home remedies.
“I had a dental patient with a dead front tooth that had turned black so she painted it with white nail polish daily.”
“An old lady swore that dog spit had healing properties so she let her dogs lick her feet when she felt it coming on. She then wanted to show me a video of said dogs licking said feet.”
“I work in dental and years ago had a patient attempt to super glue her front tooth back on after it broke in half. She screwed up and ended up gluing the chunk to her upper lip.”
“We had a patient who declined a much needed cleaning saying he could do it just as well a home with a scalpel. Didn’t brush his teeth but every few weeks he would go at the accumulated plaque and tartar with a scalpel.”

Jnr doctor come into the staff room rolling his eyes, staying ‘some guy just came in, claims he’s a farmer who just drove 100km after slicing through his chest with a circular saw. Nice try buddy, you can wait’. Well...the rest of us that know what country farmers are like jump up and bolt to the ER waiting room....yes he had cracked his own sternum through with the circular saw and held it together with one arm while driving with the other for 2 hours. He lived.
Let me guess, these stories are from America? Which makes me think it is less about people thinking they know more than doctors and much, much more about not having the money for treatment. Poor things...
I was thinking the same thing. I had friend in America that went broke after an appendectomy that cost her $55000. I couldn't believe they could charge so much for something they had no control over. A lot of Americans dont understand when I tell them that medical treatment here is a right and basically free. I had people tell me healthcare was a privilege! Makes me glad to be Australian.
Whilst I don't doubt people in the US defer seeking medical attention due to financial difficulties, we also have our fair share of DIY medicine in Australia, despite the system being fully funded. There are also a fair slab of people who don't seek help because they are in denial.
There were tens of thousands of Americans marching in the streets when Obama tried to introduce Universal healthcare. It's a different mentality in America.
