Woman drives car into Gold Coast river to escape Queensland police.

A motorist has rammed a Queensland police vehicle and then driven her car over road spikes and into a Gold Coast river in an unsuccessful attempt to escape officers.

Police said they spotted a car they were looking for on Pimpama-Jacobs Well Road after midnight.

The police car was rammed while trying to pull the vehicle over.

Officers followed the car into a carpark and placed road spikes at its entrance, but the driver launched her car over the spikes and into the Pimpama River.

She then abandoned a dog in the car and swam a short distance before police caught up with her.

The woman was this morning charged with dangerous driving.

She is due to appear in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court next month.
