GOOD NEWS: Wentworth will be returning to Foxtel for two more seasons.

Hello.

Yes.

We now have another excuse to stay in on the couch.

You see, an eighth and ninth season of Wentworth has just been confirmed, making the show Australia’s longest-running drama series.

Fans were devastated after industry rumours suggested the show was being axed after its seventh season, with a change.org petition launched as a means to keep the prison drama on our screens. To date the petition has amassed 9,111 signatures – proof of its immense fan base.

The show itself is a modern retelling of the Australian soap opera, Prisoner, which screened from 1979 – 1986. The multi Logie and AACTA award-winning program delves into the lives of the female prisoners of Wentworth Correctional Centre and has been highly commended for its gripping story lines, portrayal of diverse and strong female characters and exploration of LGBTI issues.

Now, Foxtel have confirmed the show for an extra 20 episodes, which means it will remain on the network until 2021. Currently the show’s seventh season is in post-production, and filming for the eighth and ninth seasons will begin next year.

Speaking about Wentworth’s renewal, Foxtel’s Executive Director of Television, Brian Walsh said the network was “proud and delighted”.

“The renewal of this much loved drama is testament to Foxtel’s unwavering commitment to Australian story-telling,” he said.

Wentworth has captivated audiences in Australia and all over the world with its gritty nail-biting story-lines, remarkable performances by an extensive ensemble cast and high production values. The commissioning of these additional episodes will see it reach an extraordinary 100 episodes”.
