Wentworth Miller says he's amazed and humbled by the world's reaction to his honesty.

Wentworth Miller, 43, has expressed his gratitude for the support he received after posting about a cruel meme of himself he discovered online.

On Tuesday, the actor posted an update to his Facebook page with the meme from a popular site called The LAD Bible.

It showed a picture of Miller, 43, in his buff Prison Break days juxtaposed with a paparazzi shot of him that depicted a change in his weight.

Miller explained in his Facebook post that the second image was taken at a time in his life when he was suicidal and depressed. He felt like “damaged goods” and turned to food as a panacea.

The unkind meme. Image via Facebook.

The second image had been taken by paparazzi and published in tabloids with headlines like, “Fit to flab” and “Hunk to chunk”.

Generally, social media is a scourge, no? It’s a place where every hate-filled troll and ill-informed adolescent can vent their spleen.

Miller certainly found it so when he discovered the hurtful meme. Unexpectedly, though, his post about how the meme made him feel resulted in a surge of support and encouragement from Facebook users, and even The LAD Bible removed the meme and issued a sincere apology.

Miller wrote today:

I’ve read a ton of the comments to my last post. And will read more.

What amazes me – humbles me – is how fantastic people are.

Again and again, someone claiming to be struggling themselves, out of gas by the side of the road, took time to offer support. To speak life. Modeling grace and hope and compassion and generosity.

Generally I like to post every day M-F. But after my last post I felt the need to take a beat. Reflect. Go for a walk….

It’s unfortunate that the internet can be a place where an unsuspecting person can find themselves the butt of a joke that a million people laugh at. It’s inspiring that so many people chose not to laugh.
