This will remind you that humans are animals, too.

Welcome to Mamamia’s art endeavour, the Voulez-Vous Project. Every week we celebrate emerging artists, designers, illustrators, creators and women who knit using their vaginas. (Kidding. Maybe.)

The aim: to make the internet a slightly more beautiful, captivating, or thought-provoking place. To find out more about the Voulez-Vous project, click here.

This week’s featured artist is Pennie Pomroy, whose detailed paintings juxtapose fantasy with the everyday, and display a vivid sense of imagination. Her current series of work shows heroines and their animal counterparts, using feathers and fur to illustrate aspects of human personality.

“Having spent much of my childhood on farms I have a passion for animals,” Pennie explains. “They add an element of the unexpected to my work, often finding themselves in unusual places. I think that there is just something about animals, something intangible that people can connect with and often draws them in.”

She has two girls – aged 3 and 10 months – and says that she wants to create works that they can love and relate to. “I think that children particularly like my works because they relish the beauty and magic that can be created by simply allowing worlds to be imagined.”

In August, Pennie is having a solo show at the Sydney Children’s Hospital, which she says “will hopefully bring some joy and a sense of escape to all the families who need to be there”.

If you’d like to see more of Pennie Pomroy’s work (or even consider purchasing a piece), you can find her shop here and her website here.
