Vodka tampons and eyeballing. Craze or crazy?

Some people will do the craziest, STUPIDEST things when alcohol is involved. Last year, it was revealed that teenagers in the US were embracing a new drinking game: vodka eyeballing and now, it’s (apparently) vodka tampons. But let’s start with the eyeballing.

The Australian reported:

Vodka tampon, anyone?

Doctors say some youngsters are trying out a new drinking game, where they pour vodka right into someone’s eyes. It’s called eyeballing.

They’re even posting some videos of this online for all the world to see. A substance abuse expert is now warning people not to turn a blind eye to the practice, Fox41.com reports.

“Vodka is about 40 to 50 per cent pure alcohol, which can take off the top layer of the cornea. It can cause scarring,” said Dr Stutman. “Can it make you go blind? I suppose it probably could, if it causes severe enough scarring of the cornea.

Okaaaay. If that wasn’t bad enough (it was), this week we heard about another trend: vodka tampons.

Here at Mamamia HQ, we’re an office divided. Half of us think this story is an urban legend, the other half reckon it’s true (yes, we checked Snopes and even they’re “undetermined” on this one).

According to several sources, vodka tampons are the new frontier of underage drinking.

We found this story on the German news site The Local, via WeWantInformation. It reports..

Police in southern Germany warned this week of a dangerous new form of alcohol abuse among teens – using tampons soaked in vodka to get drunk quickly and hide the smell. The practice poses grave health risks, they said.

… They also warned girls that the alcohol could damage vaginal walls and increase the risk of infection. Boys have reportedly also been using tampons anally.

The ‘trend’ also featured on an episode of CSI, and was brought up on American talk show, The Doctors:
