A tale of a jinxed dress.

The photo that appeared in The Australian’s Media section

There are some things in my wardrobe I just cannot wear. It has nothing to do with whether they fit or flatter or are season-appropriate. These are clothes that have been jinxed. Jinxed by events out of my control which have tarnished them forever.

For example, I have this red dress which I used to love. It’s from Ginger and Smart circa 2005 and I wore it a lot in 2006 when I worked at Channel 9. If that wasn’t enough to pox it, I happened to be wearing it on the day I was photographed for a story for The Australian’s Media section.

I also had blonde hair – what’s with that?

Anyway, I wore the frock and the photo became the tipping point in my blink-and-you’ll-miss-it career in TV when things went seriously pear-shaped. I hated that photo and afterwards, I hated myself. So it’s taken me almost 6 years to haul it out of the back of the closet and give it another twirl.

Same dress, years later. Trying to build IKEA couch.

I wore it to work when I had some meetings so I had to look a bit spiffy.

Just after arriving at the office, I lifted up my arm and ripped a hole in the armpit. KARMA.

I wasn’t meant to wear that dress.

Here I am wondering how to assemble the office couch that we’d bought. Not happy. I blame the dress.

So now, I’ve listened to the universe and given the dress away.

I have some other clothes which – like certain songs – I can’t bear to have in my life anymore because they transport me too completely to a darker, sadder place. Or just represent someone I’m not – and don’t want to be – anymore.

Do you have clothes like this? Unlucky clothes? Or conversely, are there clothes that have particularly positive associations for you? Lucky undies maybe?

Perhaps you have clothes or accessories (jewellery for example) that have a strong connection to a time or person in your life?
