"9 ways I am turning into my mother."

I recently went away for a week with my kids. It was a lovely, relaxing holiday, fuss free and filled with fun. I came back relaxed, rejuvenated and with the realisation that I was slowly turning into my mother.

Have you had that feeling too? The dawning sensation that the gap you thought was a chasm is now just a teeny-tiny crack.

It's the age old cliche that we will end up like our mothers, a cliche often used as a form of fear mongering.

Now don’t get me wrong, I actually adore my mother and if there is anyone in the world I would like to turn into right after Amal Clooney she is right up there.

But I just didn’t think it would happen this soon....

Here are seven signs I am turning into my mother:

1. I bought sensible walking shoes in a leisurewear shop for my holiday.

But, gosh, they ARE good to wear. Image via iStock.

At the time I thought the shoes were great, comfy, practical and they survived a New Zealand rainstorm. Upon my return though, I have realised that they are well, um, a bit mumsy. But, gosh, they ARE good to wear.

2. I use phrases that can really only be termed as mum-isms.

“If all your friends jumped off a bridge, would you?” I snarl on a daily basis. “Don't you use that tone with me young lady,” I cackle. “Because I said so, that's why!” I say with determined enthusiasm.

3. I get my kids' names mixed up.

Well there are three of them…

4. I ask my children to help me with technology.

The eight-year-old programs the Foxtel, the six-year-old downloads my iTunes shows. All my kids could work out how to use the in-flight entertainment when I hadn't a clue. Even my four-year-old plugs my phone in to charge when I forget...

5. My bag is a bottomless pit of things I might need just in case.

Tissues, sunscreen, pain killers, band aids, small packets of snacks, match box cars, a note book- cause you know I might need to jot things down - an assortment of chargers, padlocks and fold out shopping bags and hand lotion. (Yes, hand lotion...)

6. I have a dedicated bucket in my laundry for soaking whites.

And I am starting to know which cycle to use on the washing machine.

7. I’ve started to buy two of a clothing item when I think it’s a “classic.”

You know, in case they sell out and I can never get one again.

8. I make my children take a cardigan just in case.

And I carry an umbrella in my car.

9. I talk during movies.

Totally oblivious to the side ways glances my kids are giving me and the eye raises they are exchanging with each other.

Yep, as much as I've fought it, I am turning into my mother.
