Onya Jennifer Lawrence: Why this actress is winning some serious fans.

By JAMILA RIZVI

Jennifer Lawrence, star of the Silver Linings Playbook, tripped up the stairs as she went to collect her Best Actress Oscar at the Academy Awards:

As a total Oscars tragic, my immediate reaction was one of pity for the poor girl, who had just had the biggest night of her life buggered up a tad… and I’m ashamed to admit that my reaction was coupled with a little bit of “oooh, good some drama on what has been a pretty ordinary night” too.

And while my attention was momentarily drawn away from Lawrence in favour of dear Hugh Jackman (Aussie Aussie Aussie) who leaped dashingly to his feet to offer her an outstretched hand – I couldn’t help but think “Wow, she falls so beautifully, she’s like a Disney Princess”.

But through the rest of the night Lawrence showed a remarkably Un-Disney-Princess-esque face to the world. And it was one of the most endearing things I’ve seen in the decidedly NOT endearing world of Hollywood.

In response to (a completely inane) question from a journalist about what was going through her mind when she fell on the stairs, 22-year-old Lawrence replied: “A bad word that I can’t say… that starts with ‘F’.”

Well. Fair enough.

The woman is Just. So. Likeable. She’s like the anti-Hollywood.

While she looks fantastic in a big fancy frock and a posh up-do, she speaks and acts like she’s your good mate.

Don’t believe me? Here is Jennifer Lawrence fronting the press after her win.

Highlights of the interview include Lawrence taking time out of the glamour, glitz and celebration to touch on the seriously important social issues her film depicts. She says, of the stigma that still surrounds mental illness in our community: “It’s just so bizarre how in this world if you have asthma, you take asthma medication. If you have diabetes, you take diabetes medication. But as soon as you have to take medicine for your mind, it’s such a stigma behind it.”

When asked about getting ready for the Oscars, Lawrence gave the delightfully droll (and slightly drunk) response: “I don’t know. I just woke up and tried on the dress and it fit, thank god. Then I took a shower. I don’t know. That’s what I did. Then I got my hair and makeup done. And then I came to the Oscars.”

And later in the press conference, Lawrence confirmed what we’d suspected already: “I’m sorry…I did a shot before.”

And why shouldn’t she? Twenty-two-years-old with an Oscar in hand, meeting the actors and actresses she’s no doubt admired since she was a little kid. That calls for a serious number of celebratory drinks in my opinion.

Lawrence is self deprecating and seems genuinely aware of the strange world that is Hollywood. She hasn’t accepted the craziness of her surroundings as the norm yet and that is awfully refreshing. Lawrence is just an ordinary twenty-something young woman – who happens to be a shit hot actress – and is having the time of her life.

Jennifer Lawrence’s first meeting with Hollywood megastar Jack Nicholson was also caught on camera, as he crashed a live interview she was doing after her win. Lawrence’s astonishment and excitement upon meeting Nicholson and hearing his praise for her acting is quite lovely:

Okay. So, I’ve become marginally obsessed with this actress in the past 48 hours (yeah alright… marginally is a fair understatement). I just hope that Lawrence manages to maintain the reality check she’s got going on because its resulting charm is winning her some serious fans. In a Hollywood obsessed with glamour, appearance, fame and fortune that’s going to be an incredibly tough ask – but if anyone can do it, I think it will be the delightfully imperfect Lawrence.
