Hair how-to: Get a perfect topknot using only a sock.

Topknot fans rejoice.

(And no we’re not talking to devotees of some new anarchist punk band devotees, we mean fans of the casual updo.

Celebrities Kelly Rowland, Kristin Chenoweth and Salma Hayek have ensured the easiest hairstyle to copy will be around for a few more seasons after they wore their hair piled up high in a topknot on the Oscars red carpet.

A messy topknot bun is a look I sport most days and I will be devastated the day it goes out of style.

Dev-as-tated.

As in the day George Bush Jr became the 43rd President of the United States devastated. But we don’t need to worry about that (or Republicans) for a while yet thanks to the aforementioned celebrity fans of the topknot.

Well played Kelly, Kristin and Salma.

While I have been adverse to the voluminous topknot for awhile (call it thick hair envy) it is really easy to get the look using… um, an old sock. Take a look at this video tutorial below and if you can’t watch it now because your boss inconveniently expects you to work (pffft) there’s some steps outlined below:

What you’ll need: Bobby pins, hair elastics, an old sock (or donut hair thingy) and hairspray.

Step 1: Cut a couple of inches off the toe end of an old sock (a thinner sock will work best). Roll it down to resemble a donut shape.

Step 2: Pull your hair up into a high ponytail and secure it with an elastic. Place the rolled sock around the base of your ponytail.

Step 3: Starting at the front, smooth your hair over the donut, tucking the ends underneath as you go. Repeat this step as you slowly roll down the sock.

Step 4: Once at the base of your ponytail, secure it with another hair elastic or bobby pins.

Step 5: Spray hairspray to or dry shampoo over the hair. If you have pesky baby hair around your hairline you can rough it up and make it look modern.

Take a look at Paula Joye’s topknot tutorial to see how to do this (plus another nifty trick if you aren’t keen on the donut/sock method). OR you could just chuck it up into an bun on the top of your head and be done with it.

But wait there’s more (but sadly no steak knife sets) topknot inspiration here:
