Teenage lesbian comes out to her parents - with a cake.

When you’re a teenager, there are countless things that are hard to tell your parents. Like, “Sorry mum, your car no longer has a rear view mirror” or “Here is my report.”

But imagine having to tell your parents you were gay. Imagine having to come out.

Unfortunately, not every story of coming out has a happy ending.

But this one does. And it’ll make your day.

One American teenager decided a combination of cake and wordplay was the best way to break the news to her parents. Under the username ‘ellende-generes’, she posted a photo on her tumblr page of a cake piped with the words “I’m gay” accompanied by a letter to her mum and dad.

The gesture is at once extremely touching and chuckle-worthy, thanks to some very ‘sweet’ puns:

Good morning parents,

I’m gay. I’ve wanted to tell you for a long time. I thought doing it this way would be a piece of cake. I hope you still love me. I mean, it’s hard not to love someone who baked you a cake.

All of my friends know and still love me. Your acceptance would be the icing on the cake.

I hope you, much like this cake, are not in tiers.

I hope we can look back on this and say “boy, this one really takes the cake.”

It gets batter.

Love,
Laurel

Naturally, the image went viral and the internet fell in love with Laurel.

More importantly, the cake received an equally positive response from her parents.

My mom saw it and cried of happiness. We hugged and cried together. Then, we all ate the cake and talked. I am very lucky to have such supporting parents – Thanks everyone! Have a gay day!

As if this story couldn’t get any better (or “batter”), Laurel is now using her fame to give LGBT advice on her tumblr, which she declares “Home of the Gayke”.

We’re asking you to share this story. Because it might be the one that gives a teenager the courage to come out to their family. With or without a cake.
