After Karl Stefanovic's axing, Sylvia Jeffreys could be the next to leave the Today show.

It would be an understatement to say that it’s been a tumultuous week for the hosts of the Today show.

Yesterday it was announced that Peter Stefanovic would be leaving Channel Nine after a 15-year stint at the network, and today’s reports confirmed that his brother, Karl Stefanovic, will also be stepping down as the host of the breakfast program, a job he’s held for 14 years.

However, now the attention has shifted to the show’s newsreader, Sylvia Jeffreys, who is expected to be the next to depart.

According to News Corp writer, Colin Vickery, a Channel Nine source claims the 32-year-old has been “earmarked to host a new prime time show,” while also hinting that further changes might be in play.

“All of this movement would have to ring alarm bells for others at Nine, particularly the Today team, that a new broom might be about to sweep others up,” writes Vickery.

Entertainment journalist, Peter Ford, also hinted that Sylvia would be leaving the morning show, with Perth-based Nine News presenter, Tracy Vo, tapped to replace her.

In a statement released by the Nine Network earlier today, Nine said Karl’s departure from Today was a joint agreement.

“Nine and Karl Stefanovic have agreed it is time for him to step off the Today show,” it read.

“Karl remains on contract with the network and will continue to host (his other show) This Time Next Year, which records in February.

“For over 14 years Karl has been at the centre of the Today Show bringing his unique personality and perspective to the day’s news and current affairs.

“An announcement on the new line up and format of the Today Show will be made in the coming weeks.”

Currently on his Aspen honeymoon with his new wife Jasmine Yarbrough, Karl’s statement reflected a similar sentiment.

“For the last 14 years I’ve co-hosted the best show on television. I can’t thank Nine enough for the opportunity. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be good enough to host this grand show for so long,” it read.

This, of course, comes after months of rumours that Karl’s tenure on Today would be coming to an end, the earliest of which came in September this year, after the 44-year-old’s reputation had been severely tarnished by the tumultuous breakdown of his relationship with his ex-wife Cassandra Thorburn, causing a drastic drop in Today ratings.
