Have schools gone mad? These decisions make us think so

Three schools, three crazy decisions. We couldn’t believe it when we woke up to this news …

Crazy decision 1

A primary school has banned girls from wearing shorts, saying they must wear dresses. Yes, last time we checked it was 2013.

Bathurst Public School in New South Wales made the decision recently and parents are letting them know exactly how they feel about it. The school is being accused of being out-dated as well as sexist.

Gender stereotyping is something many modern parents are trying to fight against so when schools send the message that girls wear skirts not shorts, it makes it much harder to explain it to our children. It's hard to play in skirts. Its difficult to run and jump and be a kid.

School principal Kate White is refusing to comment further on the situation but told the Western Advocate that the decision was because some girls had been competitive over brand-name shorts while others weren't wearing them appropriately.

She said parents just need to let the school know if they'd like them to wear shorts.

Crazy decision 2

An English school has banned all mention of Christmas until December. At least they haven't banned Christmas all together like some schools! Jane Porter, headmistress at Whitehill Primary School in Kent says if children even mention the word Christmas before December, their play time will be cut.

Parents say their children shouldn't be restricted in this way. Many are too young to understand the rule in the first place.

Ms Porter is sticking by her strict rule saying it ruins the spirit of Christmas if students begin discussing it too early. Seriously?

Father-of-three Robert Dalton told the Daily Mail, "I feel this is wrong and immoral. Kids have Christmas rammed down their throat by TV advertising as early as September and yet they can be punished for mentioning it at school. If they are caught saying the word Christmas they stand to lose their golden time flexi playtime which is used as a reward for good work and behavioiur."

Other parents have rightly accused the school of scrooge-like behaviour.

Not mad enough for you? Try this then.

Crazy decision 3

A school in the US has changed the school pick up system however parents have real concerns regarding the safety of it. Father Jim Howe is one concerned parent who pointed out to South Cumberland Elementary School in Tennessee that the new system sees cars banked up along a major highway and children having to walk a long distance to find their parents.

Mr Howe refused to use the new system and parked his car in the school grounds to pick up his kids. It was then that Avery Aytes, the resources officer in charge of the system and a sheriff's deputy called the concerned dad into his office and ended up arresting him for disorderly conduct.

Thankfully Mr Howe's girlfriend caught the entire altercation on film. It shows the dad calmly trying to explain the flaws in the news system and Mr Aytes refusing to listen.

The video was posted on YouTube and has been viewed 400,000 times. It shows the 40-year-old calmly pointing out the flaws in the new system and Aytes angrily dismissing his concerns.
