Schapelle’s first day of freedom

After nine years behind bars in Kerobokan prison, Schapelle Corby took her first steps into the outside world through an intense media throng. As visibly distressed Corby, 36, left jail she was covered from head to toe, with a tea towel over her face, as she made her way surrounded by security to the prosecutor’s office and parole board. Schapelle is currently in hiding at a luxury resort. It’s thought that she will live out the rest of her parole period with sister Mercedes at her family home in Kuta.

Daniel’s murder trial begins

The jury for Brett Peter Cowan, accused murderer of 13-year-old Queensland boy Daniel Morcombe in 2003, was selected this afternoon at the start of his trial in Brisbane. Six women and six men, with two reserve jurors, will be responsible for Cowan's fate.  Before Daniel's parents and brothers, the 44-year-old pleaded not guilty to murder, indecent treatment of a child and interfering with a corpse.  Up to 150 witnesses may be called to provide evidence during the trial, which is expected to run for 6 weeks.

Bushfires destroy everything in their path

Victoria has been facing the worst fires since Black Saturday in 2009. Up to 30 properties in Victoria have been destroyed so far, with around 150 fires burning across the state. 48 fires are not yet under control.

Sydney teen gang-raped

A 14-year-old girl has allegedly been gang-raped in Doonside, Sydney. Police believe the attack occurred on a pathway at Bill Colbourne Reserve at 11pm on Saturday night. They are looking for six males who they believe to be of African-American background. She was taken to hospital while the police sex crimes squad investigate.

Olympic figure-skating faces go viral

With the Winter Olympics in Sochi underway, it seems the figure-skating events are fast becoming the most popular. Some skaters are achieving notoriety not through their skating, but through the reaction to their scores. Ashely Wagner from the USA was so shocked by her score that she  briefly forgot that people worldwide were watching her and swore at her team mate. Of course, she's immediately become a meme.
