This morning Robin Bailey returned to work and reduced an entire city to tears.

Editor’s note: This post deals with suicide. Some readers may find this article triggering.

Robin Bailey has returned to the radio this morning, five weeks since her husband Tony Smart took his own life.

The popular radio host returned to Brisbanes’ 97.3 FM Robin, Terry and Bob Breakfast team with an emotional speech about the five weeks since the death of her husband, who was battling depression.

As the Courier Mail reported:

With a box of tissues on hand, and her voice breaking, Bailey read from a prepared statement and said that the five weeks since her husband Tony Smart died were the hardest of her life.

She said telling her children that their dad was never going to come home was the worst thing she’d ever had to do, but praised the three boys for their “exceptional and extraordinary” decision to pay tribute to their dad at his funeral.

Bailey said while the experience of losing her husband was heartwrenching, she said she was inspired by the many people who’d stepped up for her.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you in Brisbane … who said a prayer, lit a candle, left a Facebook message. Many times in my sleepless nights, when I read those messages, they kept me going … they got us through.

Robin also thanked her close friends, who had helped her and her three sons, aged 14, 12 and 10. She said her children were back at school today, and she felt it was time for her to return to work (she is also back doing features on the Channel 9 show Weekend Today).

Robin is ready to move forward. “Suicide was his decision, and I refuse to let it scar myself and my children for the rest of our lives.”

“Life really does go on and I choose, and will fight, for my children and I to be happy”.

Welcome back, Robin.

Listen to Robin be ten kinds of incredible. But have tissues handy:

Welcome back, Robin. We’re all cheering you on and sending love.
