UPDATE: Red Cadeaux sustained a bad injury but 'looks happy.'

UPDATE:

ABC News confirms Melbourne Cup runner Red Cadeaux is stable after collapsing near the finish line in today’s big race.

Cadeaux’s trainer Ed Dunlop confirms he is “in great hands … I wasn’t expecting as encouraging news with that injury”.

The 11-year-old is suspected to have sustained a very serious fetlock injury, and the next 24-hours are crucial to his recovery potential but Dunlop says despite the trauma,  Cadeaux “looks happy”.

He failed to finish the race.

Three-time Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux collapsed today on-field near the finish line.

The 11-year-old gelding was rushed into a horse ambulance and taken to Werribee Veterinary Clinic with an injured fetlock, the joint just above the horse’s hoof.

A green screen was erected around the Ed Dunlop-trained horse in the final stages of the race after he was injured.

Red Cadeaux failed to finish the race.

Red Cadeaux was able to rise to his feet and walk to the horse ambulance, earning the cheers of the crowd.

Channel 7 commentator Jason Richardson spoke to Dunlop after the injury.

“Ed was absolutely devastated,” Richardson said, reports News.com.au. “This is his favourite animal. It’s maybe Australia’s most favourite animal.”

Two horses died after the Melbourne Cup last year — one, Admire Rakti, of cardiac arrest, and the other, Araldo, had to be put down after shattering his hind leg after being scared by a spectator.

Now everyone is hoping that Red Cadeaux isn’t seriously injured.
