Driver charged over deadly Ravenshoe cafe explosion

The driver of a ute which crashed into a cafe in Ravenshoe in north Queensland, killing two people in a subsequent explosion, has been charged.

61-year-old Cairns man, Brian Scutt, was charged over the June 2015 incident this afternoon.

Two women died in hospital after the blast and another 17 people were injured — 14 seriously.

Scutt was also badly hurt in the crash.

After an extensive police investigation, he was charged with one count each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing grievous bodily harm.

He is due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on December 19.
