I had a Mirena inserted in October 2019. I had been on the Pill since December 2011 and was not happy with the irregular bleeding I was experiencing several times a month. My gynaecologist tried to insert the Mirena in his office but it was far too painful and so I rebooked to have the insertion under general anaesthetic. Following the procedure I bleed almost constantly for 10 weeks. Since January everything has been pretty normal but yesterday I went to the GP to have the Mirena removed so my husband and I could start a family. It was disastrous! My GP could find the string but when he pulled it to remove the device it was excruciating and he stopped at my request. I now have to wait six weeks to see my gynaecologist and now face the possibility of another traumatising attempt to remove the Mirena. My GP has suggested general anaesthetic for the removal. I would not consider the Mirena again until I have finished having my family and can have the devise in for a full five years.
