Peter Stefanovic didn't have the best start to 2017 after spending New Year's Eve in hospital.

Peter Stefanovic didn’t have the best start to 2017.

Instead of partying with friends or relaxing with fiance Sylvia Jeffreys on New Year’s Eve the Today Show host spent the holiday in hospital.

Stefanovic tweeted that he was being treated for parotitis- inflammation of salivary glands – for two days over the New Year’s break.

The 35-year-old did manage to catch the midnight fireworks, however, telling fans that he had a view of the display from his hospital bed in a photo uploaded to Instagram.

The snap shows Pete smiling, yet swollen-cheeked, in a hospital bed with Sylvia and his mum Jennifer by his side.

He reassured followers he was “on the mend” and mentioned the “wonderful” nurses at the Prince of Wales Hospital.

The Channel Nine journalist seemed to be in good spirits, making light of his situation in a Tweet posted Wednesday morning.

Pete captioned a short video of a dog dressed in sunglasses, a T-shirt and a bandana, “spent the whole time watching this”.

We hope the popular host feels better soon.
