The photograph one Australian family has waited 400 days to see.

On his release, Peter Greste told the world he wanted to “feel sand under my toes”. And now, joyfully, he’s doing exactly that.

Journalist Peter Greste has posted his first tweet since his release from prison two days ago.

Greste has flown to Cyprus with his brother, Andrew, and will soon be en-route back to Australia.

When asked what he would be doing on his release, he told reporters, “Watching a few sunsets. I haven’t seen one of those at all for a very long time, watching the stars, feeling the sand under my toes — the little things.

“You realise it is those little beautiful moments of life that are really precious, and spending time with my family of course. That’s what’s important, not the big issues.”

And this is his first, joyful post.

His release came more than 400 days after he was jailed in Egypt for charges that included spreading false news in his work for Al Jazeera.

Finally, Peter Greste has been freed.

Greste’s other brother Mike has been managing the journalist’s Twitter account since his arrest and building social media campaign to put pressure on the Egyptian government, but handed over the reins today.

Here are some more of his first posts:

“This has been like a rebirth,” Greste said in an interview on Al Jazeera.

“I can’t tell you how relieved I am at being free, I mean I really didn’t expect it.

Greste has vowed to continue fighting for the release of his two colleagues Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed, who remain in prison.
