Inside Sir Paul McCartney's $21m NYC penthouse.

Well that’s not we were expecting, Sir Paul McCartney.

The former Beatle has this week added a New York penthouse to his property portfolio. But while it’s pretty flashy, it’s not as flashy as we expected. At. All.

The $US15.5m ($21.1m) Fifth Avenue penthouse boasts 2 stories, “breathtaking views from Central Park”, 5 bedrooms, 5-plus bathrooms and 21 rooms all up. Built in 1967, it’s the first time the apartment has ever been on the market. It was previously owned by property developer Manny Duel, who built it for his wife. The New York Times once described it as a “glamorous 1960s time capsule with a dash of Hollywood”.

Paul and wife Nancy.

McCartney bought the penthouse with his wife Nancy, who he married in 2011. According to Page Six, which broke the story, their names were revealed as buyers because: "Co-op buyers must use their own names and they were listed as Paul and Nancy McCartney." There are only 12 other apartments in the building.

When we first imagined the penthouse, we pictured pure opulence - after all, last year Sir Paul was worth an estimated $660 million.

And the floorplan showed promise:

But we have to admit, some of the other rooms seem kinda basic for a cool $15m.

This is one of the bedrooms:

Nice, sure, but it hardly hits it out of the park.

And the living room:

And the other living room:

We get it - it's a long way from shabby. In fact, it's perhaps proof that no matter how much money you have, some people will always choose a home over a showpiece.

And for that Sir Paul, we give you a very big tick.

Now take a look through the rest of the house - we know you want to:

What do you think? Worth 15 million bucks? Let us know in the comments...
