A Queensland dad has been so inspired by an Australian film that he started his own paper plane competition.

Dan Adler started the Up Up Upper Mt Gravatt Paper Plane Championships with his two sons after being motivated by the film, Paper Planes.

The 2015 movie, which stars Sam Worthington, follows an Australian boy on his mission to compete in the World Paper Plane Championships.

It was based on the true story of Dylan Parker, who made it to the Paper Wings competition in Austria in 2009.

“When we saw the movie it connected with us and I wanted to teach my boys how to build something from nothing,” Adler told the ABC.

“Laptops and iPads make children disconnected from the community and I wanted to change that.

“I thought if I could teach them how to start an inaugural paper plane competition, how cool would that be?”

More than 150 children competed in competition held in Brisbane on the weekend, with the longest throw measuring 34 metres.

Andrew Daddo and Holly Wainwright talk about the competition on This Glorious Mess. Post continues after podcast.

Adler hopes that the championships, which raised over $1,000 for local charities, will continue to be held annually.

The father-of-two says his hired his eight-year-old son as the “managing director” of the event, while his nine-year-old son is the “creative director”.

“You looked around and there was such a great buzz and vibe seeing all the kids happy,” said Adler.

“They were connecting with their dads, helping fold the planes, and there wasn’t an iPad in sight.”

Welcome, parents, to the slightly-sticky world of This Glorious Mess.
