Open post of the week

Anyone else a bit sleepy after staying up late watching Rupert, James and Rebekah at the parliamentary hearings last night? I’m such a media nerd.

It’s open post time when I give you an overview of the week around here and you can discuss anything at all you want to, in the comments.

The Today Show

I’m often asked about Karl and what he’s really like. We’ve been doing the ‘What’s Making News‘ segment each week for about 18 months and I could not be more comfortable on that set. As for Karl, he is exactly how he appears on screen. So is Lisa. And Georgie. And Ben. And Dickie. And Stevie Jacobs.

You have to be. At that hour and when you’re doing almost 20 hours of live TV every week, you cannot feasibly be fake or put on a TV personality. You just have to be yourself.

Karl and I have a great time. My Dad says he can tell I’m relaxed because my voice is normal pitch. “When you’re nervous, you’re voice goes up. The difference between Today and your Sky show is about an octave.”

Ha. He’s bang on. At LEAST an octave.

I’m asked: do you get nervous? Nope. Because I trust Karl to drive the bus responsibly, move us from topic to topic and I can read his body language about when we have to move on or when I have to wrap it up.

It’s honestly one of my favourite things to do. The crew and cast are just so warm and wonderful. A more supportive team I’ve never worked with – behind the scenes too.

The post

Yesterday, I published this post that I wrote about journalism and then went to an all-day meeting that meant I was off-line pretty much the whole day. This doesn’t happen that long but it’s astonishing how often me being off-line co-incides with us publishing a post written by me that becomes heated.

Do you think it’s Freudian? I think maybe it is.

Wendi Deng

Right, my obsession in the News of The World saga has shifted from Rebekah Brooks to Wendi Deng.

I fell asleep before the pie-throwing incident at the parliamentary hearing but even before it happened, I was captivated by the way Wendi sat there like a Tiger Wife, poised and ready to pounce. Hugely protective of her husband, ready to do whatever was required to support him, physically or emotionally. I’ve watched this video so many times and I still bloody love it. Watch her leap up, dive and slap him in the head.

Then, she scrambled up after falling over, picked up the pie and threw it at the guy, hitting him and causing her to shout “Got him!” before laughing.

I think I love her.

I had a gay ol’ time at Disney on Ice. Loved the show. Met Mickey Mouse afterwards. Kids spellbound. I can usually think of nothing worse than the opportunity to meet the star of a show afterwards. I always think “Ugh, how awkward.” But I always make an exception if I get the chance to take my kids backstage after one of their concerts. The best part is that the characters can’t talk so there are no awkward moments.

The dress

I did a spot of shopping from my favourite fashion site, shopbop.com last week and I’ve been waiting eagerly for it to arrive.

When this very small box landed on my desk, it didn’t occur to me that it was my order because I’d ordered * cough * 3 dresses.

But it was.

And they weren’t micro minis or made from tissue paper.

There were 3 dresses in this box

No wonder postage is free.

Here is one of the dresses from the box. On the right is how it looked on the website:

I couldn’t wait until summer to wear it with bare legs. So I brought out the opaques.

Thanks Hurricane Vanessa.

The fashion obsession: coloured jeans

I’m trying to decided whether to jump on board this trend or whether the train has already left the station. What do you think about coloured denim?

I’m going to start answering your questions in this post – please leave them in comments and I’ll choose some to answer next week. Ask me anything.
