Nidhi Chaphekar, flight attendant in iconic Brussels attack photo "doing well".

It’s the image that has graced newspaper front pages and social media worldwide. The iconic photo of Nidhi Chaphekar.

With her yellow flight attendant uniform torn from her body she sits shocked and stunned on a seat just moments after the bomb went off in the Brussels  terror attacks that left 32 people dead.

With her body dust covered and her eyes weeping in that moment the photograph has encapsulated the horror that took place.

Ms Chephekar, the woman in the jacket is a long-serving employee of the India-based flight company Jet Airways and mother of two. She has been the focus of worldwide attention with many wondering just how she survived.

It has now been reported that the young mother is recovering from injuries sustained in the bombings. The flight attendant underwent surgery yesterday for injuries and burns to her face and eyes.

Her family have now spoken out.

Rupesh Chaphenkar, Nidhi’s husband, told the Times of India: “For the whole day we did not have any information. All they told us was she is safe. But how do I know if they are not just giving us false hopes? I just want to hear her voice once.”

He said he was at work when he heard about the terror attack and rushed home while his sister-in-law picked up their two children from school.

Nidhi’s 11-year-old daughter reportedly kept asking her aunt: “Mamma ka kuch pata chala kya? (Any news about mum?)”

The Times reports that she was due to leave Brussels for Mumbai, where she is based, when the attacks hit.

After her photo went viral the hashtag #PrayforNidhi began trending.

Her employer has tweeted:

“Nidhi Amit we are proud of you and the entire team of Jet Airways in Brussels. We stand strong because of your tireless commitment and devotion. We will bring you back home soon.  ”

The airline released a statement saying  “Two staff have sustained injuries in the explosion at Brussels airport. Both of them are receiving medical care at hospitals.

“We are working very closely with the Indian Embassy and are in touch with the ambassador to plan the next steps for evacuation of our guests from Brussels.

“Jet Airways has cancelled flights operating to/from and via Brussels.”

 

 

Meanwhile the journalist who took the photo Ketevan Kardava, a Georgian reporter travelling for work has told Time magazine she was in the departure hall of the Brussels airport when the first explosion went off.

“I was in shock. It was instinct,” Ms Kardava said.

“Everyone was covered in blood. They lost their legs. All of them,” she said. “I kept looking to see my legs. With my hands, I wanted to feel them.”

“What do you do in this situation if you’re a journalist? Help? Ask doctor to come? Or take a photo?” she said.

“In that very moment, I realized that to show the world what was happening in this moment of terror, a photo was more important.”

“The people I photographed were not able to run and I wasn’t able to help them. It was very, very difficult for me to leave them.”
