It's official: these are the names of the smartest people.

If you can read this post, it’s probably too late. You’ve already been born, named and have well and truly hit a point in your life where you’ve deciphered whether or not you’re a genius yet.

So if you’ve spent your years lamenting over your lack of academic prowess, and blamed your parents incessantly for some mediocre genes, know that you can now blame them for something else.

Your name. And whether it’s on the genius list or not.

So if it is too late, don’t fear, your future kids may actually have a shot at growing up with half a brain. And it might, too, just come down to their name.

Thanks to genealogy website, MooseRoots, they have identified the most common first names for geniuses by using a database of 14,750 names of notable Philosophers, mathematicians, writers, artists and composers, poet laureates and Nobel Prize winners.

Watch: don’t want a have a genius kid? That’s okay. Try these names. Post continues after video…

According to the research, ‘Mary’ is the most common name of female geniuses, with 140 names on the list. ‘John’ it seems is the most popular genius name for men, with an impressive 352 ‘Johns’ on the list.

Here are the full lists:

Of course, it may only be a slight coincidence that both John and Mary happen to be two of the most common names generally. And, well, you know, it would be pretty self-explanatory that they would then dominate a list of geniuses too.

But hey, what would I know? My name isn’t even on the list. So I’m probably biased.

Or just wrong.
