1. Elderly man “snapped” and killed wife for laughing at him, police say.

A 77-year-old man allegedly “just snapped” and stabbed his wife after she laughed at him when he accused her of having an affair.

Ben Ivanoff faced Gosford Local Court on Monday charged with the murder of his wife of 55 years, Leonne, the Central Coast Gosford Express Advocate reports.

The couple’s son Paul found his mother dead in their Central Coast home at Umina Beach after his father called him on Sunday afternoon. Paul called police, who arrested Mr Ivanoff.

The accused’s Legal Aid solicitor said he suffered from depression, macular degeneration, heart problems and had recently been diagnosed with depression.

Police allege that while there was no history of violence, the relationship had deteriorated in recent years.

It is alleged Mr Ivanoff believed his wife was having an affair and whenever he raised it with her she would laugh at him, which enraged him.

2. Donald Trump attacks Meryl Streep for Golden Globes speech.

US president-elect Donald Trump has hit back at actress Meryl Streep for her criticism of him in her Golden Globes acceptance speech.

Streep yesterday took aim at Mr Trump for mocking journalist Serge Kovaleski for his disability during a campaign rally in November 2015.

“That instinct to humiliate, when it’s modelled by someone in a public platform, it filters down into everyone’s life because it gives permission for others to do the same,” Streep said in front a crowd of her peers at the awards night.

“Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others we all lose.”

In response, Trump sent out three tweets calling the 67-year-old “over-rated” and a “Hilary flunky who lost big”, while denying he mocked the reporter.

3. Hunt for driver who killed Darwin cyclist.

The family of a cyclist killed on a Darwin road on New Year’s Eve have pleaded for the driver responsible for his death to come forward.

Jason McCormick fell off his bike about 10pm on December 31 and was run over by a car, which stopped briefly before leaving him to die at the scene, News.com.au reports.

Police believe two men were driving the vehicle. One of two men arrested over the incident was released from custody on Sunday, as police continue to search for the second suspect.

“We want him to come forward,” Jason’s father, John McCormick, told AAP.

“We want them to tell the truth so that they can be punished for what they’ve done.”

4. Twenty sharks spotted in Victoria’s “sharkier than normal” waters.

Twenty sharks were spotted at beaches across Victoria’s coast on Monday, just one day after two Melbourne beaches were closed due to sightings of the fish.

The sightings resulted in a beach near Angelsea being closed for two hours yesterday, AAP reports.

Life Saving Victoria operations manager Greg Scott said Victorian waters were “sharkier than normal” this summer.

“There are a lot more sharks closer to shore than we’ve seen at any time in recent years,” Mr Scott told 3AW on Monday.

Mr Scott said mainly bronze whalers have been spotted in the bay but there were great whites seen between Fairhaven Beach and Lorne.

Fisheries Victoria acting executive director Dallas D’Silva said while shark sightings were relatively common, shark bites were rare.

It’s thought that wild storms in recent weeks that washed high levels of nutrients into the bay may have attracted the bait fish that are luring sharks closer to land.

5. Five men arrested over $200 million drug bust.

Police arrested five men charged with importing 300kg of pseudoephedrine after one of the biggest seizures of the drug ingredient in years.

The pseudoephedrine would have been used to make more than $200 million of the drug ice,
AAP reports.

Authorities said the 300kg of pseudoephedrine was placed inside 167 OMO washing powder boxes, which were hidden within a shipment of the washing powder to Melbourne from Vietnam last month.

Four Australian men and one Vietnamese national were arrested on Saturday and charged with drug importation offences after the shipment was traced to a factory in Tottenham, Australian Federal Police say.

6. Claims Sussan Ley bid on another Queensland property as calls for her sacking are made.

Federal Labor has called for Sussan Ley to resign over her alleged misuse of taxpayer funding for trips to the Gold Coast.

Ms Ley has been under fire following revelations she bought a $795,000 apartment from a Liberal National Party donor during a taxpayer-funded trip to the Gold Coast in 2015. She also admitted claiming travel costs to the Gold Coast for New Year’s Eve celebrations in 2013 and 2014.

The minister claimed the property was bought “on a whim” and not the purpose of the 2015 trip.

However, the Herald Sun reports that Ms Ley also made an unsuccessful bid on a property in 2014, before later billing the taxpayer thousands of dollars in airfares, accommodation and taxi fares for the trip.

Cabinet secretary Arthur Sinodinos will act as health minister as Ms Ley stands down during the investigation into her spending.

Labor’s shadow special minister of state Don Farrell insists Ms Ley should resign completely or be sacked, AAP reports.

“The minister has confused her public interests with her private interests,” he told Sky News.

He said there was no point having a code of conduct for ministers if there were no penalties when it is breached.
