Man drowns north of Coffs Harbour while trying to save two girls

A man has drowned while trying to save two girls at Wooli Beach north of Coffs Harbour on the New South Wales north coast.

Police said the man, believed to be in his 60s, was pulled from the water around 1:00pm on Boxing Day.

Officers at the scene were told he had gone to help two girls who had been experiencing difficulties in the water.

Paramedics said CPR was performed as they tried to resuscitate the man but he died at the scene.

Surf Rescue brought the two girls safely to shore.
