Inside the long-running feud between Lady Gaga and Madonna.

Rumours of a feud between Lady Gaga and Madonna first sparked in 2011 when fans thought Gaga’s song Born This Way was a direct rip off of Madonna’s 1989 hit Express Yourself.

Fans and critics alike jumped on the comparisons, but Madonna stayed silent.

A few months later Gaga responded to the hype. Apparently, the only similarity she saw between the songs was the “chord progression”.

“I am not stupid enough to put a record out and be that moronic,” she told NME.

For a refresh, here is the start of Gaga’s “Born This Way”. Post continues after video.

Again, Madonna didn’t respond.

A year down the track however, she let rip.

“I certainly think she references me a lot in her work, and sometimes I think it’s amusing and flattering and well done. [But] It feels reductive,” she told 20/20 in 2012.

The lashings continued.

“I’m a big fan of [Born This Way] I am glad I helped Gaga write it,” she told Brazilian TV.

She even performed a mashup of the two songs while on tour that year.

So while Gaga was on tour, she wore a thong and fishnets reminiscent of a recent Madonna look, and reportedly mocked her on stage.

In the September of 2012, Madonna dedicated her performance of “Masterpiece” to Lady Gaga. Which was…weird.

"You wanna know something? I love her, I love her. I do love her. Imitation is the highest form of flattery," she told the audience.

In November, on stage again, Madonna claimed to have asked Gaga to join her on stage. Apparently she said no.

"It's ok. I've been rejected before. It builds a little character," she told the crowd.

In 2013, Gaga did an interview with Howard Stern. He asked her if she thought Madonna was jealous of her stardom.

"I think she's more aggravated that I'm not more upset that she doesn't like me. Because I don't care that she doesn't like me. No I don't care," she replied.

"I don't want your f****** throne. I have my own and I don't actually want yours," she continued.

In 2014, the feud reached new heights...lyrics to Madonna's new song Two Steps Behind Me were leaked by The Sun.

"You're a copycat, where's my royalty, you're a pretty girl, I'll give you that. But stealing my recipe, it's an ugly look.

"Did you study me hard enough, You're never gonna be, you're just a wannabe me. Like a sister all messed-up, who's gonna help you out? In your fantasy, you can try it tall. But you can't be me. You can walk the walk, even talk the talk. But you'll always be two steps behind me," they read.

So...subtle.

Madonna's manager insisted that the song wasn't about Gaga or anyone in particular.

Madonna even responded with denial; "There are people who want to create feuds between strong women that do no exist."

Gaga appeared to respond with a moody Instagram upload:

Under the image it read: "Careful witch I'll put a spell on you.Or maybe I already did."

Madonna REPOSTED the selfie, which she marked up to look like her new album Rebel Heart. "I said love and I meant it!" she wrote.

In 2015, they crossed paths at the Met Gala. They posed together with Katy Perry, and Madonna called it a "girls night." Gaga shared a photo from the night too, but she left it captionless...

Despite their apparent 'makeup' the year before, during an interview on Beats 1 Radio the following year Gaga said this:

"Madonna and I are very different. Just saying. We're very different and I don't mean to disrespect Madonna, she's a nice lady, and she's had a fantastic huge career, biggest pop star of all time,

"But I play a lot of instruments. I write all my own music. I spend hours and hours a day in the studio. I'm a producer, I am a writer, what I do is different," she said.

She ended abruptly with the retort; "I am who the f*** I am and this is me. My life story is my life story, just life yours is yours."

Ok, so the fight's back on then...?

But a few months later Gaga tweeted Madonna after her powerful speech about sexism in the music industry.

"You speech at the Billboard Music Awards was inspiring. You're so brave and strong. Thanks for being that for us girls we need that," she wrote to her.

In 2017, the Netflix documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two revealed perhaps the biggest insight into Gaga's feelings towards the feud.

The insult "reductive" said years earlier, seems to have stuck.

"I admired her always. I still admire her, no matter what she thinks of me. No I do. The only thing that really bothers me about her is that I'm Italian and from New York  you know? So like, if I got a problem with somebody, I'm going to f****** tell you to your face.

"But no matter how much respect I have for her as a a performer, I could never wrap my head around the fact she wouldn't look me in the eye and tell me that I was 'reductive' or whatever...I saw it on f****** TV," she said in the documentary.

In December 2018 , the feud appeared to revived by Madonna claiming Gaga's now infamous A Star Is Born quote was in fact, hers.

"There can be 100 people in a room and 99 of them don't believe in you, but all it takes is one and it just changes your whole life," is the line Gaga has been putting down - everywhere. Every press interview imaginable.

Madonna tactfully took to Instagram and posted a vintage video from the 80s. Just a casual drop into her stories feed.

"If there are 100 people in a room and 99 say they liked it, I only remember the one person who didn't," she says in the footage.

To be fair, it's not the most original saying - Lindsay Lohan even whipped it out recently.

"I could do 99 things right and one thing wrong, but it's that one thing that will be focused on," she told Paper magazine.

This brings us to today.

A photo has emerged from the Oscars, featuring a smiling Madonna and Gaga embracing each other at Madonna's post awards party.

So can we assume, feud officially, finally - over?

In case we weren't certain, Gaga and Madonna also stared into each other's eyes and eskimo kissed. We're not sure why.
