The results are in. Who is the most deceitful on social media?

Ladies of Perth, we’re on to you. A new study reveals who tells the porkie pies when it comes to social media. I’ll admit it wasn’t who I thought it would be.

We’ve all been guilty of ‘extending’ the truth on social media but a new study has found the worst offenders when it comes to telling the truth.

A social media study conducted by creative agency The Works and The University of Technology in Sydney has found that women are typically more likely to be more deceitful than men when it comes to their online activity.

In fact, 64 per cent of women included in the study were found to have got a little 'creative' when it came to telling the truth on their Twitter and Instagram accounts. That's compared to only 36 per cent of men. Maybe it's the competitive nature of women towards other women but whatever the reason, it appears we are telling far more stinkers than the boys.

Don't breathe easy yet though guys. The study also found that while women do tend to be more liberal with the truth more often, it's actually the boys who are telling the biggest porkie pies, in particular the gentlemen of Adelaide. Sydney boys are following close behind with some real online doozies being peddled.

Douglas Nichol, who is the creative partner at The Works and leader of the study says that it's often the language that we use when writing our social media posts that gives away whether we are telling the truth or not. In particular, by using the words "I" and "me" in our updates we are less likely to be spinning naughty ones because sub consciously when we lie, we use language which distances ourselves from the information.

The study also looked at the differences in smaller 'white lies' or embellishments to the truth compared to outright true lies and deceit.

It found that Australian Twitter users were not being outwardly deceitful in what they choose to share with their online followers but were absolutely guilty when it came to some minor embellishments. Oh, and Perth ladies apparently you've been found to be the worst offenders in this category followed by the men of Brisbane.

I think we've all been guilty of leading the perfect 'online life' at some point. What's the biggest porkie pie that you've put on social media?
