Two new parents rewrite Lorde's 'Royals' and it's the Best. Thing. Ever.

Two parents rewrote Lorde’s ‘Royals’, and for anyone who’s ever been sleep deprived because of baby – this is your new anthem

Even if you’re a sleep-deprived new parent, you’ve probably heard of Lorde. The 17-year-old Kiwi songstress became a household name last year when her song ‘Royals’ raced up international charts. Yesterday, she beat out the likes of Pink and Katy Perry to win the Grammy for Song of the Year. Not bad for someone who’s still in high school, huh?

Now, thanks to two new parents, ‘Royals’ has become an anthem for sleep-deprived mums and dads. But not as you know it.

Josh Stearns and Erica Carlson, inspired by the sleepless experience of life with young kids, rewrote the tune and named it ‘We’ll Never Be Rested’ – and it’s spot-on.

Consider Lorde’s lyrics:

But every song's like gold teeth, grey goose, trippin' in the bathroom
Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room
We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams.
But everybody's like Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash
We don't care, we aren't caught up in your love affair.

And now Stearns' and Carlson's:

And every minute’s like diapers, Thomas, splashin’ in the bathtub
Juice stains, snack traps, screamin’ in the minivan
They don’t care, we can’t remember the last time we dreamed
But everybody’s like swaddles, white noise, sleeping with your baby
Warm milk, rocking, let them cry it out now
We don't care, we haven't slept in a couple of years.

If you're the mum of kids who pretty much never sleep through the night, you'll be bowing down to the brilliance of this hit song hack. And guessing that the creative duo behind it finally have good sleepers of their own - or else they never would have had the energy to make this.
