Dear Tampons,
It’s time to break up.
I remember the first time we met. It was the 90’s, I was 11, and my mood ring had turned a miserable shade of grey because I had just gotten my first period. My Mum handed me a huge box of you, and after some trial and a lot of error, I finally worked you out… or so I thought!
I had seen the ads and thought that by using you, I would spend my period days dancing around in a white dress or riding a horse on the beach – no red stains in sight! I would look like a model, have really attractive friends and a gorgeous boyfriend, and be laughing so much that PMS wouldn’t dare come near me. My period would be fun with you by my side!
Of course, I soon realised that periods are about as fun as having teeth pulled and that you could never ‘cure’ me of menstruation.
How much blood do you actually lose during periods? We’ve got you covered.

Isn't 11 years old a little too young to use tampons? My mother would let me use them until I was around 14 or 15. Besides, on the your first period, its a little traumatic and you want to keep it simple until you are adjusted to it, especially your flow and whether it is 'regular' or 'super' - knowing that is important for tampon size/absorbency/prevent TSS. Didn't your mother have, like most mothers, pads on hand, prepared for the day you started?
Though I grant your comment may have come out of some feeling of concern, it's a strange point to focus on. I think the writer was using creative licence to illustrate her relationship with tampons. Her Mum might well have handed her pads too. If a girl is old enough to have her period, she's old enough to decide however she would like to manage it. It's a comedy piece with underlying political commentary - not an opportunity to shame somebody's Mum you don't know.
I say menstral cups would work out cheaper in the end might be about $62 up front but last you for 10 years. I am thinking of going that way.
