7 things you should know before getting into the water and tackling the waves:

1. Wake up early & have a healthy breakfast

Wake up with an open heart and mind for an early morning surf session. Search for the glassy, uncrowned waves. Keeping hydrated is key; coconut water is great for this. A healthy diet is an important lifestyle habit, especially when it comes to surfing. A light, organic breakfast such as granola with yoghurt, fresh fruit and honey will give you the energy to take on the surf.

2. Protect your skin & hair

Being in the sun all day can really dry you skin out, so it’s essential to protect your face with sun cream and organic zinc. Don’t worry about the zinc, it’s a part of a surfer's look! Natural oils such as coconut oil are great to use before and after surfing. They keep your hair shiny, hydrated and give you a great sun-streaked surfer look.

3. Warm up using yoga

Yoga is a great way to start your surf session, helping to stretch and warm up your body. I always start with a grateful sun salutation called Trikonasanas.  Start in the warrior pose, then transition into head stand if possible. Continue the sequence to stretch your arms, shoulders and triceps.

4. Fundamental surfing skills

It’s important to brush up on the basics of surfing. Ocean safety and knowing your equipment is a must, as well understanding how to stand up, getting the right board stance and paddling. Try a lesson with a qualified surf instructor as they will help to make your first surf experience more enjoyable.

5. Board sizes matters

There is a huge range of purpose built equipment available to beginner surfers. Big boards may not look as trendy, but they are perfect for beginners, as they allow for mistakes and help make the transition from white wash to waves as easy as possible. An accredited surf school and instructor will be able to provide you with the right equipment and main skills to get started.

6. Share a wave

Surfing with a friend is safer and a lot more enjoyable! You can share the highs and lows, motivate each other and hit the waves no matter the conditions.

7. Surf with a big smile

Surfing can be frustrating at times but getting into the water with a positive attitude will improve your skills and style. If you find yourself getting frustrated, take a second to enjoy your surroundings and change your focus. Don’t forget to breathe, appreciate the moment and, of course, laugh - it always helps. Patience is crucial, you will improve!
