Why is this woman receiving death threats?

Fans of David and Victoria Beckham don't want anyone coming between their favorite couple, as Katherine Jenkins discovered the hard way. Last week, the Welsh singer (and Dancing with the Stars alum) shot down rumors that she was having an affair with the legendary soccer player. But that didn't stop Beckham fans from attacking her Twitter account with insults and even death threats.

"Katherine has endured months of abusive tweets and messages accusing her of having an affair with David Beckham," Katherine's rep told E! News. "Some going as far as threatening her life. She simply felt that she could not deal with this any longer and so had to face these ridiculous rumors head on which is why she had to speak out."

On Friday, both Beckham and Jenkins made public statements denying the affair reports, which seem to have originated on Twitter. Appropriately, the singer tweeted her reaction to fans.

"Dear Twitter friends, I've read some horrible rumours on here & want u 2 know I absolutely deny I’ve had an affair with David Beckham," Jenkins wrote. "The rumours are very hurtful, untrue & my lawyers tell me actionable. I’ve only met David twice: once at the Military Awards in 2010 & on a night out in the West End in Feb 2012."

"We were out in a group of friends & it was just a normal fun evening out," she continued. "Just so we are clear I have never been on my own with him and never arranged to meet up."

Beckham's rep concurred, calling the reports "rubbish" and "nonsensical."

"Unfortunately, we have to deal with this type of nonsense on Twitter," the athlete's rep told E!. "One minute David is dead, then the more scurrilous rumors, there is no truth to any of it."

David, who has been married to Victoria "Posh" Beckham since 1999, has faced infidelity rumors before. In 2010, a high-class call girl named Irma Nici fueled a tabloid frenzy when she claimed that she'd been with Beckham five times. The soccer player swore he had never met Nici, and even filed a lawsuit against In Touch magazine for printing the story. (The suit was dismissed by a judge last February, who felt that Beckham's love life was a matter of "public interest.")

No one is getting sued over the Jenkins affair reports (yet), but a few of the more passionate tweeters may face a police investigation.

"With regards to the death threats, these have been reported to the police who are taking the matter very seriously," Katherine's rep told E! News.
