Kate Middleton, the professionally photogenic Duchess, shares a hairstylist with none other than Bear Grylls. Who’d have thunk it.

Although the Duchess and Bear Grylls enjoy very different lifestyles and enjoy very different cuisines (witchetty grubs, anyone?) they trust the same man with their hair.

The man behind the scissors is hair stylist Richard Ward – his salon (of the same name) is a 95-staff, 5,000 square foot salon in Chelsea, London.

He started his love affair with hair at the tender age of 16, where, like most apprentices of the craft, he spent a lot of time massaging heads and sweeping the floor.

His hair fluffing relationship with the Duchess of Cambridge started eight years ago. He told Stuff.co.nz "I remember looking over my shoulder and one of our junior stylists had been cutting her hair...I said, 'Is that Prince William's girlfriend, Kate Middleton?' And she said, 'Yeah, I've been cutting her hair.'

"I certainly made sure I knew who she was after that!"

Stuff.co.nz asked Ward to tell his top four secrets to getting hair like Kate's (aka the goddess of great hair). One of his top tips was using a quality hairdryer, "You must, must, must use a decent hairdryer with a nozzle on the end. A lot of people don't use a nozzle, but a nozzle will help to get that shine on your hair."

Now his salon sees 1000 clients a week, many of them celebrities, including Pippa Middleton, Liz Hurley, Kim Cattrall, Dustin Hoffman, and Ivana Trump.

"We've got two chefs that work in the salon because a lot of people like food while they're having their hair done or when they're spending a lot of time in the salon, and it's the same old joke when Bear comes in: they always come up to me and say, 'If he orders a sandwich should I fill it with spiders and witchetty grubs, is that all he eats?'"
