Kasey Chambers was up against her ex-husband for an ARIA award and they made a special pact.

Kasey Chambers won more than just another ARIA Award on Tuesday night. The country music legend also scored herself a well-deserved sleep-in.

Speaking to Mamamia on the red carpet before the ceremony, the mother-of-two said she and ex-husband, singer/songwriter Shane Nicholson, had come to a special arrangement based on who took out the Best Country Album gong.

“I think it’s a little bit of an unwritten thing, that whoever doesn’t win – if it’s out of one of us – the other one has to go home and get up with the kids [in the morning],” she said.

“It hasn’t been officially worked out, but I think he knows that’s what we’re both thinking.”

Chambers and Nicholson separated in 2013 after eight years of marriage, but share parenting of their two children, Arlo Ray and Poet Poppin, born in 2010 and 2011.

Tuesday night's award was the eighth ARIA for the 41-year-old, having earned her first back in 1991 for her debut album The Captain.

In accepting the prize for her latest album, Dragonfly, Chambers reflected on how her life has changed over the years.

“My life is so weird, I was literally getting nits out of my kid’s hair this morning and now I’m holding this,” she said.

“I know there’s a lot of negative said about being a woman in this industry over 40 years old but I f***ing love it.”

She might have been in the biz for nearly two decades, but Chambers told Mamamia she still finds the whole ARIAs process quite intimidating.

"It's only once a year that we do this. This is not my life. I'm doing kids and making school lunches basically - that's my life," she said.

"And then I come to something like this, and I just find it so weird. It's really weird. I'd love to pretend and be like, 'Oh yes, I take it all in my stride' or whatever. But it's really strange."
