It’s the hardest working, most under-appreciated staple of the food world – the humble bowl of cereal.

You don’t see the ol’ UNCLE TOBYS Oat Crisp blowing up the Insta-feeds adorned with #FoodPorn praise. But those delicious honey and macadamia clusters are there for you and the kids (with no fuss whatsoever) every damn morning.

Eternally un-thanked for its nutritional value – fibre, wholegrains, essential vitamins and minerals, cereal also provides the important benefits of grains.

But today, on the holiest, most sacred day for cereal worshippers we celebrate the best breakfast in the world – CEREAL.

It’s officially International Cereal Day, people.

So when your alarm goes off at that ungodly morning hour, think not of the dreaded commute and the impending nine to five. Take a moment to appreciate the delicious, nutritious, flaky miracle that is cereal.

Today, all of us here at the Mamamia Women’s Network are doing just that. We’re all sharing the multitude of reasons we love cereal so much, and some of these might inspire you to fill a bowl in tribute.

I like that you can mix it up and make cereal different every time you have it – adding different fruit, yoghurt, coconut flakes, nuts etc. depending on what you have on hand or what you feel like that day. I like cereal with yoghurt instead of milk so it stays crunchy and is more filling. It’s lovely for a relaxed weekend breakfast reading the paper or a magazine as it won’t be less enjoyable when it goes cold like toast or eggs.” – Briony

“It’s easy, it’s nutritious. You just know that the kids are getting something healthy with a minimum of fuss and effort.” – Alys

It’s quick, convenient and there’s so much variety you never get bored.” – Alexis

“I was raised eating cereal and to be honest, it feels odd to eat anything else for breakfast. It’s such a good combination – the milk is refreshing and cold, and then you have the tastes and textures of whatever cereal you have with it. I also like how the texture of it changes – so you start off all crispy and crunchy and it gradually softens.” – Kahla

“After picking up Quick Oats in winter last year, I’ve eaten them for breakfast every work day since. On weekends I actually get sad when I can’t have them (as I keep a big box at work) so I’ve stockpiled them at home too. I love the apple and cinnamon/apple and honey/apple and raspberry multipack as it tastes so delicious and could not be easier to make. One minute and 30 seconds in the microwave and I’m eating a hot and delicious breakfast that’s actually good for me. It’s the smell, it’s the taste, it’s the convenience. Unbeatable.” – Brittany

“My kids have cereal everyday. I absolutely have to fill up my 9 year old son, and my 8 year old daughter will chow it down, because they need sustenance for the day. Breakfast also has to have a nutritional purposes – I can’t have them scoffing down sugar.” – Olivia

I’m not ashamed to admit that in my student days, cereal was often my ‘go-to dinner’ food. Actually, it was pretty much my ‘go-to whenever’ food. Sometimes after a long day, you just need some ‘me time’ aka sitting on the couch in your underwear with a bowl of cereal and milk watching Gilmore Girls.” – Anna

“It’s a pantry staple in our household. Cereal can always be relied upon for a quick, healthy meal. It lasts in the cupboard for ages so you always know it will be there when needed!” – Rosie

Cereal is like the stable partner who accepts you for who you are, and will take you in all of your forms. You don’t need to dress up for cereal: it’ll take you pants-less, morning-breath and all, but is also something you can come home to at any time.” – Natalia

You know what the best thing about oats is? I can eat it in the car on the way to the station, and there is never any spillage. Ever.” – Laura

“Get ready for an unpopular opinion: cereal is best eaten atop a fancy-pants, full cream yoghurt. Yes, this mightn’t be its conventional usage, but it really works for me. I start each morning with a scoop of my favourite yoghurt (caramelised fig, anyone?), a handful of fruit and berries and sprinkle all of this with a blend of wholegrain, wheat, corn and bran. It keeps you full, it tastes amazing and it looks as if I bought it from my newly-hipsterised-local.” – Candice
