Win tickets to ‘Midnight In Paris,’ starring Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams and directed by Woody Allen.

Last year, we took the family to the USA. A Clark Griswald style American Vacation – Disneyland, Las Vegas and, as Thelma and Louise liked to call it, ‘The goddamn Grand Canyon.’

Everyone had a ball, no one fell sick … and not once did we get lost. This was because I am an excellent navigator and Jim is a patient and attentive driver. Okay, not really.

Jim reckons renting a GPS was the best $50 he’s ever spent. We keyed in the address of our Vegas hotel as we were leaving Anaheim and the voice of the gentlest woman in America guided us there without so much as a, ‘For f*ck’s sake. I told you to take the third exit then get into the far lane so you can get onto the off ramp!’ Jim christened the GPS woman ‘Angelina,’ and if she had a body I’m reasonably sure he would have left me for her.

Midnight in Paris, starring Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams, is in cinemas October 20

Pre-GPS devices, travel was less predictable, but arguably more magical. Getting lost led us to discover the restaurant hidden down a bin-lined laneway; the waterfall at the end of a dirt road; the two star hotel with the five-star storyteller behind the bar; the love of a lifetime.

Which brings me to the point of this post – the new romantic comedy, ‘Midnight in Paris,’ with Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams and directed by Woody Allen.

It’s the story of a writer and his fiancée, who take a romantic trip to Paris (is there any other kind?) One night she goes dancing with friends and he bales out to take a solo walk. Fascinated, each night he walks a little further into the soul of the city, finding inspiration he never realised he’d been looking for. Of course, this doesn’t auger well for the wedding. Put it this way – I hope everyone who bought gifts kept receipts.
