CULT BUY: The perfect product for getting rid of those dark under eye circles.

I would like to begin by reminding you that you are obviously perfect, just the way you are.

There is not a product in the world that you ‘need’. The people in your life who matter don’t care if you have a bit of Vegemite on your left cheek, or if your teeth aren’t Hollywood white, or if you have a pimple or 10. In the scheme of things, these vain details are entirely inconsequential.

With that said, everyone has their ‘thing’.

For years, mine were my under eye circles. I have asked Google how to get rid of them hundreds of times.

It’s allergies, one blog assured me. Just drink more water, another insisted. And then of course, there’s the prevailing wisdom of get more sleep.

Anyone who shares the same insecurity, take a deep breath, because I’m about to say something that might shock you.

For some of us, dark circles under our eyes are genetic. And it doesn’t matter how much sleep you get, or if you drink 15 litres of water a day, they’re still going to be staring back at you in the mirror.

For my entire adolescence I hated them. I thought they made me look tired and unwell. I envied those who didn’t have them at all, and bought every over-priced product that promised to eliminate them altogether.

In case you were wondering, $80 under eye creams don’t work. They won’t change the pigment, and they can’t do anything about collagen.

Save your time and your money. Under eye circles are often a byproduct of deep set eyes - something many of us are born with.

Of the hundreds of dollars I've spent on products, there is one that I absolutely swear by. I discovered it first in the States, but in the last few years it's made its way to Australia.

Cover FX cream concealer retails for $40 at Sephora, but will last you forever. The small tube comes in 12 different shades and is designed specifically "to provide buildable coverage for both the under eye area and face to conceal imperfections, darkness, and discolorations".

Here's the trick. Apply your foundation first (I use a dewy Cover FX natural finish). Then, use a small amount of cream concealer, applying it in a triangle shape under your eye.

I used a shade or two lighter than my foundation, and it brightens the under eye area all the way to the cheek bone. I blend it with my fingers, so that the transition is seamless.

If you just apply it to the under eye circle, it will emphasise rather than eliminate. You can build the product up as much as you need, by softly dabbing it, until the darkness completely disappears. I always make sure to do my inner eye as well, because often that can be quite dark.

Cover FX lasts all day and makes you look more awake and refreshed. If under eye circles are something you're trying to get rid of, I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

When I was wash my make up off, I still have circles under my eyes. But I am entirely at peace with them. If there was some way to remove them permanently, I wouldn't. They've been passed down to me in my very special genetics, and are part of what makes me who I am.

This post is not sponsored. I just swear by this product, and wanted to pass it on.
