Of course Helen Mirren cuts her own hair

There are certain scenarios that you just can’t imagine celebrities ever find themselves in.

Like eating Mi Goreng for dinner for a week because it’s the end of the pay month and they’re down to their last $22.30. Or grappling with DIY hair dye kits (and accidentally staining their bathroom sink purple in the process) because forking out $150 every six weeks is just not plausible.

Because celebrities are so rich and well-connected, we imagine their day-to-day lives are an endless stream of appointments at high-end salons and beauticians, punctuated with five-star degustation lunches.

That may be the case for some Hollywood stars, but not Dame Helen Mirren.

In an interview with Redbook magazine, Helen – internationally respected actresses, winner of bazillions of awards, poster girl for timeless glamour, coolest lady in the world – confirmed the rumours that she cuts her own hair. Even before her always flawless red carpet appearances.

We always knew she was just like us (Academy Award notwithstanding).

“Not always, but yes. I can’t handle going to the hairdresser every six weeks, so I only go about once a year,” the 68-year-old said.

“In between, I get out the scissors and do something, usually rather disastrously. Sometimes I’ll even chop my hair the morning of a big red-carpet event.”

Before reading on, please take a moment to conjure up, then enjoy, the mental image of Dame Helen Mirren perched in front of her bathroom mirror, hacking at her ends with nail/kitchen scissors and swearing under her breath when she accidentally snips too much. That’s how everyone tends to their hair, right? Oh… just us and Hannah from Girls? Okay.

The Red star also explained that while she wears makeup every day, she wears less of it as she gets older. Her tip: “You can get away with naked eyes if you’ve got red lips. Or red lips and sunglasses.” For proof of just how well Helen wears a bright red lip, click here.

Red lips, sunglasses, cutting own hair. Finally, a celebrity beauty regimen that is actually achievable.
