The Academy Awards proved short hair can be super glam.

Thinking about a dramatic hair change but worried about whether a short pixie do will have enough ‘glam’ factor for a night out? Don’t be.

With celebs like Michelle Williams, Halle Berry, Scarlett Johnansson and everyone’s BFF Jennifer Lawrence getting their brave on and lopping the locks, there’s no better time to go the chop and feel the wind on the back of your neck. (And seriously, there is no easier hairstyle to have. Easy to wash, dries in no time, and all it needs for the daytime is a tiny bit of product and a scrunch.)

Lily Collins demonstrated perfectly at the 2015 Oscars just how sophisticated and elegant short hair can be and definitely gave the long haired up-do a run for its money in the style stakes. Here are some cheeky tips and tricks to help you get your short hair red carpet ready.

Slicked back

Seems like every decade the wet look pops back up – although it’s one for the brave. Teamed with a smokey eye and tonnes of black liner, the modern slick-back is the perfect sexy evening do for girls rocking a short do. Plus, it’s super easy to achieve.

Wash your hair and find yourself some mousse. Apply through the roots and then blow dry your hair using a very small round brush. Next, using some gel or texturiser paste, use your fingers to work the style back off your face. Apply more product as necessary – you want the hair to stay put. You can finish with a final spritz of hair spray if you like but try not to overload the ends of your hair with product.

Business up back, party up front

If you like a little length around the face, a short hair cut can still work for you.

Take a leaf out of Elsa Pataky's book and get be beachy, messy waves without the need for a lot of length. By getting your stylist to leave some longer sections around the front, you can easily turn short hair into evening glam with the use of some sea salt texturiser spray and a very small curling iron (or flat iron).

Statement colour

Having short hair is the perfect style to get yourself some statement colour. If you're feeling brave you could commit to a full platinum style like Rita Ora, or even bite the bullet and throw some serious colour like a pastel violet or pink at it.

Take it to the side

Changing the part in your hair can totally transform a hair style. By moving your part over to the side and creating a sexy sweep, you can easily create a red carpet do. Elsa Pataky (who gets two mentions here because she just makes short hair look so damn fab) demonstrates exactly how it's done. This is a style that would work with both straight hair, and with a slight wave.

Let's mess around

To me, Lily Collins 2015 Oscars do is short hair perfection. It's stylish, it's modern and it's fun.

Having short hair like Lily's is liberating and really shows off her gorgeous features. You can achieve the same look by some volumising product prior to blow drying, and using a barrel shape brush to create volume at the roots. Then use your fingers and some texturising paste to piece out sections and mess up the look a little.

Cut it up

Always secretly wanted an undercut but wondering if it's feminine enough for you? Uh, yeah it is. Take Scar-Jo as an example. Here she is with a heavy undercut and some perfect colouring. It really is the perfect 'wash and wear' style (that will score you a few more minutes shut eye in the morning).

Copy Scarlett's style by running a straightener over the longer top section and smoothing down with some gel or shine serum.
